They are the fallen, but not because they failed but because they succeeded, for their country and for us. And we remember them. That is what Memorial Day is about, and God willing it will always be here each year at the beginning of summer, so that those who gave their lives will always be remembered.
Memorial Day is a time of friends and family, and we at Ben’s Creek Nursery hope you all have plenty of both. But remember to remember those who gave their all for our freedom. And in that spirit, here are a couple of nicely done videos, both featuring remarks by then President Reagan. Whatever your politics, that man could give a patriotic speech.
The first is a video by Hillsdale College made specifically for Memorial Day.
This next video is a tribute on the 40th anniversary of the D-Day landing at Normandy. It is regarded as one of President Reagan’s most memorable speeches, given at Pointe du Hoc on the northern French coast where 225 Rangers climbed the 100′ cliffs to take back France. This video is not specifically a Memorial Day tribute, but Memorial Day is specifically about the Rangers at Pointe du Hoc as well as all the others who gave their last full measure of devotion. So give it a listen.
They are the fallen, but not because they failed but because in being willing to die for their country, they succeeded. We close then with these words about the boys of Pointe du Hoc that could as well be written about all those we remember today:
These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. These are the heroes who helped end a war.
